BigApps is the premier showcase of NYC’s tech ecosystem. It’s a competition that empowers New York’s sharpest minds to solve the city’s toughest challenges through technology, making NYC a better place to Live, Work, Learn, and Play. Whether you’re a hacker or a maker, a designer or an investor, a novice or a pro, we provide resources that make it easy to make a difference. Come to build. Come to network. Come to win.

NYC BigApps 2014 is an initiative of NYCEDC to promote government transparency and the creation of innovative new technologies. Following NYC BigApps 2013, this year’s event is the fifth annual run of the competition and is being managed by HR&A Advisors in collaboration with Super Vision and Splash.

Am I eligible?

BigApps is open to all legal residents of the United States and all legally registered corporations or organizations domiciled in the United States. Employees of event producers and NYCEDC are not eligible, and any employees of the City of New York or of program sponsors who have any involvement with NYC BigApps need to notify us at info@nycbigapps.com so we can determine eligibility. Companies with more than 25 employees may participate but are not eligible for prizes. For full terms and conditions visit our Prizes page.

Do I need to attend all the events?

Together with our partners, we’ve created a series of high-energy, high-impact events that aim to inform and inspire competition participants, facilitate team formation, and encourage communication among experts and participants. Attendance is completely voluntary – with one exception. The only event requiring attendance from at least one member of a team is the Product Showcase on July 19 at Industry City. To be considered for our prizes, at least one team member must attend this event and to demo your product prototype.

What are the criteria for the winning submissions?

All product submissions will be judged for BigApps Category and Product prizes based on a combination of the following six criteria:

 - Potential positive impact on New York City residents, visitors, and businesses
 - Long-term viability, including size of potential user base and business prospects
 - Innovative use of technology and data sets or APIs
 - User experience and design
 - Degree to which team composition reflects the multidisciplinary spirit of BigApps
 - Team’s participation in BigApps events and the BigApps web platform

All product submissions to a specific BigIdea Challenge will be judged based on the criteria stated on the BigIdea webpage.

Can I enter more than one submission?

Yes. There is no limit to how many times an eligible person or organization may enter. An individual may also participate on behalf of more than one team, corporation, or nonprofit organization. If you submit two or more applications that are substantially similar, the Competition Administrator reserves the right to disqualify submissions or require you to choose one submission to enter into the competition.

What is a BigIdea Challenge and do I need to solve one?

BigIdea Challenges are blueprints for solving pressing NYC-specific problems that have been sourced from the city’s leading civic organizations and City agencies. Our partners have identified challenges, potential user bases, and data resources, and are offering specific prizes and perks to teams that solve their challenges. BigApps teams are not required to solve a BigIdea Challenge to be considered for Category or Product prizes, but we encourage you to browse our BigIdea Hub to learn which issues our city’s civic leaders have identified.

What is required of my final submission?

To be considered for prizes, all Contestants must build a BigApps Project Page through our web platform, powered by Splash! This page allows you to promote your produce (and your team), recruit new team members, and solicit ideas from the public. Final pages must include a text description of your Product, a list of individuals who contributed to your Product and their skillset, a list of data sets or APIs used, and the Issue Category and (if applicable) BigIdea Challenge your Product seeks to solve.

Your submission must also provide access to a beta version of your Product and include a video or screenshot of the Product. Stay tuned for instructions on how to share access to your new technology.

How does judging work?

For Category and Product Prizes, BigApps judging occurs in two rounds. All submissions received by July 12 will be screened for eligibility by the Competition Administrator and then scored based on our evaluation criteria by a series of Evaluators recruited from the tech, design, business, and civic sectors. Evaluators will select up to 20 BigApps Finalists in late July. Finalists will then have the opportunity to refine their products over the summer and pitch their prototypes to our Selection Committee during a live judging event in mid-September. The Selection Committee will select and announce all Category and Product Prize winners at our Awards Ceremony the same day.

For BigIdea Prizes, judging will occur based on a schedule and process outlined on individual BigIdea pages. Where no special process is indicated, teams can assume the BigIdea Partner will evaluate submissions and select winners after the July 12 submission deadline.

Does my submission have to be new for this competition?

No, your application does not have to be created after the launch of the competition, provided it meets all of the submission requirements outlined in the Official Rules. However, Contestants cannot post a Submission that has been publicly available for more than one year as of the Competition start date. Your submission also cannot be substantially similar to a prior submission entered in an earlier NYC BigApps competition.

I don’t want anyone to see my ideas. Is there a way to make the project page private?

Our core mission is to drive innovation in civic technology by connecting people and ideas that otherwise might not cross paths. We also want to show off our tech teams and create opportunities for emerging talent to connect through our web platform. To achieve these goals, we require that all Project Pages and BigApps submissions be displayed to the public, and we strongly encourage you to share your ideas. This is the most effective way to gather public feedback, find teammates, and to promote your app. And as any investor will tell you, ideas are the easy part – real value comes from execution, and you definitely don’t need to give away the secret sauce.

How do you protect my intellectual property?

All entrants, regardless of winner status, will retain intellectual property ownership of their products. All Category and Product Prize winners must agree to make their applications available for free throughout the competition period and for one year following the Award Ceremony. In addition, several BigIdea Challenges may require winners to transfer or share ownership as a condition of accepting prizes or other perks. These conditions are listed on individual BigIdea Pages, but for a complete list, please contact us at info@nycbigapps.com.
